Winter visitors are arriving: ducks on the ponds, rails in the marsh, harriers and kestrels over open fields. Bald Eagles and Osprey begin nesting, and the Venice Rookery's Great Blue Herons can start as early as November.
The Celery Fields is Sarasota County's top birding spot, with 252 species tallied by Sarasota Audubon. Myakka River State Park, Oscar Scherer State Park (for Florida Scrub-Jays), and the Venice Area Audubon Rookery are also local favorites.
Wintering ducks such as Ring-necked Duck, Blue-winged Teal, and Northern Shoveler arrive, along with rails, Northern Harrier, and American Kestrel. Bald Eagles and Osprey start nesting, and resident Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks, Limpkins, and Sandhill Cranes are around all year.

Most are. Myakka River State Park ($6 per vehicle) and Oscar Scherer State Park ($5 per vehicle) charge state park entry fees. Each spot page lists its fees and sources.
