Where to see Painted Buntings near Sarasota and Bradenton
Painted Buntings winter in Florida, and two free Audubon feeder stations near Sarasota and Bradenton are the most dependable public places to look: the Sarasota Audubon Nature Center at the Celery Fields and the bird blind at Felts Audubon Preserve in Palmetto.
What you're looking for
Adult males are hard to mistake: a blue head, red underparts, and a green back. Females and young birds are plain, bright green all over, so a "green finch" at a Florida feeder in winter is worth a second look.
The eastern population breeds mainly in Georgia and South Carolina and winters in Florida and the Caribbean. Away from feeders, they keep low in weedy, shrubby edges and thickets, so they are easy to miss.

Painted Bunting Celebration, Dec 5
Saturday, Dec 5, 2026, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Felts Audubon Preserve, 4600 24th Ave E, Palmetto, FL 34221.
Manatee County Audubon's family-friendly day celebrating the return of the Painted Bunting, with an artist village, artisan market, painting contest, craft stations, workshops, photo walks, birdwatching tours through the blinds, and a conservation station. Parking is free but limited, along the road.
Tips
- Sit and wait. At both feeder stations the buntings come and go, so give it time rather than walking past.
- Look low. Away from feeders, Painted Buntings keep to low, weedy, shrubby cover, so scan the edges around the feeder stations too.
- Don't skip the green birds. Females and young birds are plain green; adult males are the showy ones.
- Keep your distance and stay quiet at the blinds so everyone gets a look. No pets at Felts.
Why they need a hand
Painted Buntings are in decline, according to WUSF's 2024 report on the Painted Bunting Observation Team (PBOT), a banding and tracking project led by Dr. Jamie Rotenberg that relies on community scientists with backyard feeders.
