Overview

Shamrock Park is a Sarasota County park in South Venice, across the Intracoastal Waterway from Caspersen Beach. It has 2.3 miles of paved multi-use trail that connects to the Venetian Waterway Trail and the Legacy Trail, plus mostly unpaved trails through dry scrub.

The scrub is home to threatened Florida Scrub-Jays and many Gopher Tortoises. Sarasota Audubon says eBirders have reported more than 170 species here. A Groove-billed Ani spent the 2024-25 winter here, often with the scrub-jays.

Birds to expect by season

Late October and November

The scrub-jays are resident, so any morning is a good one. Along the waterway, look for Little Blue Herons, both night-herons, Anhinga, cormorants, ibis, and egrets, with Bald Eagles, Osprey, and Red-shouldered Hawks overhead.

Trails and viewing spots

  • Central scrub around the nature center: Florida Scrub-Jays.
  • Paved trail along the Intracoastal Waterway: scrub-jays, waders, and raptors. Watch the sky for birds crossing between Caspersen Beach and Shamrock.
  • Unpaved trails through the scrub: Gopher Tortoises and scrub birds.

Tips

  • Watch for fast cyclists on the paved trails.
  • Leashed dogs are allowed.
  • Check the nature center before you go. Sarasota Audubon notes it has been under renovation, and county listings conflict on whether it is open (one lists Saturday drop-in hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., another says it is closed for window renovations).
  • Caspersen Beach across the waterway currently has no vehicle parking (walk-in or bike-in only), per the county's park status report.

Accessibility

The paved multi-use trail is wheelchair friendly, and the Florida Birding Trail lists accessible parking and an accessible restroom. Scrub trails are unpaved sand.
